    Residency in Spain

Everything you should know about residency in Spain

Spanish paperwork can be confusing because different documents are often mixed together. A NIE number, a TIE card, EU registration and family residence paperwork are not the same thing.

This page gives a practical overview. It does not replace review of your nationality, residence status, visa approval, family relationship or documents.

    Know the difference

NIE, TIE, EU registration, EX19 and EX24 are different routes

These documents are often mixed up. They are not interchangeable. Understanding the difference avoids wrong appointments, wrong forms and wasted time.

    NIE

    Identification number

A NIE is a foreigner identification number used for Spanish legal, tax and administrative matters. It is often needed for property, taxes, notary steps and practical procedures.

NIE is a number. It is not residence.

    TIE

    Physical residence card

A TIE is a physical card for certain non EU foreigners who already have a visa or residence authorisation and need to document their legal stay in Spain.

TIE is a card. It normally follows an authorisation.

    EU Registration

    EU residence certificate

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens may need registration if they live in Spain for more than three months. This is not the same as a visa.

EU citizens do not usually need a visa, but paperwork may still apply.

    EX19

    EU family member route

EX19 may be relevant for certain non EU family members of EU citizens, and in specific cases connected with Spanish citizens where the EU route applies.

Family route should be reviewed before filing.

    EX24

    Family of Spanish citizen route

EX24 may be relevant for certain family members of Spanish citizens where the EX19 route does not apply.

EX19 and EX24 should not be confused.

    Common situations

    Which situation matches yours?

I am buying property and need NIE

Foreign buyers often need a NIE before notary completion, tax filings or practical property steps. This does not mean they have residence in Spain.

I have a visa or approval and need my card

If you already have a visa or residence approval, you may need to complete TIE steps in Spain.

I am an EU citizen moving to Spain

EU citizens may not need a visa, but EU registration and practical documentation may be relevant if they live in Spain.

I am a family member of an EU or Spanish citizen

Family residence routes can involve EX19 or EX24 depending on the relationship, nationality and circumstances.

Do you need a visa route first?

If you are not sure whether you have the right visa or residence authorisation, the paperwork route should not be treated as a standalone appointment issue. First, clarify your residence route.

    Step 1

    Clarify visa or residence route

Understand whether you need a visa, EU registration or a family route before booking paperwork.

    Step 2

Prepare NIE, TIE or registration paperwork

Once the route is clear, the document, appointment and supporting evidence can be prepared correctly.
